I got started in this business in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina landed on the MS Gulf Coast and then another month later, Hurricane Rita hit the TX Coast. I was a 30-year-old single mother of three all under the age of 12.
Prior to Katrina, I grew up in Baton Rouge, LA and Gautier, MS (close to Pascagoula) so I am a Hurricane Alley Veteran. I have had hurricane parties, run from large storms, went through property damage from storms, lived in disaster areas without power for weeks at a time, and eventually ended up chasing storms to now working mostly disputed claims either in appraisal, mediation, or arbitration.
I initially got started in 2005 in an M.R.U. (Mobile Response Unit) in Tyler, TX and was then transferred to the content unit in Lake Mary, FL processing content/personal property claims in New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina.
I started Xactjust, Inc in 2015 and have worked large loss property residential and commercial claims in appraisal as a representative for plaintiff (policyholder) and defense (Insurance Company) sides as well as served as neutral Umpire. Appraisals often include multiple coverage items once it gets to this process of the claim, including contents.
Anyone who has ever been on any side of an insurance claim, regardless of the cause of loss i.e. fire, wind, flood, water damage and has had to deal with the content loss section of their policy, the response is always the same, “What? I have to document, photo, list, age the list of items, and price check this?!....ugh”
Ultimately, the policyholder seems to think that the insurance company is responsible to handle all the content lists; however, how is the insurance company to know what personal property you have, where it came from, how old it is, and what is costs? There is a disconnect between the roles of responsibilities. This only adds to the stress levels of both Insurance desk adjusters and policyholders, especially after a large storm when there is property loss to deal with as well.
It’s like being handed extra homework when you’re home sick! Where do you start?
There aren’t any companies, other than a random person at a restoration company who might be able to help put together a list, but these people generally have not spent time working directly with these claims to know exactly what is needed and in the correct format to process this part of the claim seamlessly.
That’s where we are different.
We have a content unit with licensed adjusters both in the field and in the office. We can handle your content list, photos, price checks and put together a packet for your insurance the way they need it.
We know what they need because we’ve invested our time and done our homework for the last 20 years. My daughter, Shelby Billeaud is also a licensed Insurance Adjuster and has done her time in the Content Unit with Insurance Companies. Believe it or not, she loves it.
The only question is, “Do you need help with your homework?”
